Which Teams Concede The Most Corners?

For every league that we log corner stats for we have a dedicated page that shows you which teams concede the most corners in that league. For example, check out our Teams That Concede The Most Corners In The Premier League page

As a general rule you might find from the statistics that teams nearer the bottom of the table concede the most corners. Teams that concede the most goals generally also concede the most corners due to the fact that these teams are attacked by their opposition more than other teams. Teams that play a very defensive style of football may also concede a lot of corners due to the fact that they do not attack their opposition and allow their opposition to come onto them.

Predicting Corners Conceded

Which Factors Predict Teams That Concede Corners?

There are a number of factors that might influence how many corners a team concedes. You might want to consider

  • How attacking or defensive a team is. Teams that set out to defend may concede more corners than teams that play on the front foot. The analogy of 'parking the bus' is a good one to remember. Ironically it was Jose Mourinho who coined this phrase as manager of Chelsea when they played Spurs at Stamford Bridge (19th September 2004) - 'They didn't play football. One thing is defend well, but try to win the game and play some football. Another thing is to defend, and defend and defend and kick the ball away, fall down, demanding to see the medical department. I would have been frustrated if I had been a supporter who paid £50 to watch this game because Spurs came to defend...Tottenham might as well have put the team bus in front of their goal'. The match finished 0-0 and there was 15 corners in the game. Chelsea won 9 corners. Spurs won 6.
  • The general style of football in a league may affect how many corners there are in games. For example, if you take a look at Corner Statistics in La Liga in Spain you will see that games generally have fewer corners that games in the English Premier League. Even the best attacking teams like Barcelona may win relatively few corners compared to other teams. This may be because the style of play in a league is more about keeping the ball and playing through the middle of the pitch, as opposed to pushing forward down the flanks.
