We return to Group A for our next preview of this upcoming fixture between Phillippines and Switzerland when the two teams clash at the Dunedin Stadium with the minnows, Phillippines, making their debut in this World Cup but facing a tough assignment as they are placed in a group consisting of New Zealand, Norway and their upcoming opponents, Switzerland.

Phillippines finally secured a place in the World Cup finals thanks to progressing through to the semi-finals of the 2022 Asian Cup and just being amongst the 32 nations participating in this tournament marks a significant achievement for the debutants.

After a disappointing sequence of results which saw Phillippines register just two wins during a period of 10 matches overall from early September of last year through to mid-February this year including a 5-0 thrashing by Iceland in the Pinatar Cup, Alen Stajcic's side have since staged a recovery.

Five wins from their last six internationals will give the Phillippines valuable momentum and confidence for this upcoming group campaign but they haven't faced another European nation since that landslide defeat to Iceland back in February.

Switzerland are ranked 20th in the FIFA rankings and they are favourites to progress from the group stage and into the knockout rounds along with Norway, with their best record in a World Cup being in the last 16 which they achieved back in 2015.

However, the Swiss will need to put in a professional display against Phillippines in order to get themselves off to a positive start in Group A and this is by no means guaranteed as Switzerland head into this upcoming encounter in Dunedin on the back of a winless run of seven matches overall.

Two defeats in the form of losses to Denmark and Iceland have outweighed the other five draws which included stalemates with Poland (home and away), China, Zambia and Morocco although it could be argued that the Swiss have only lost twice in their previous 10 internationals overall.

Switzerland's only other appearance in a World Cup saw them lose three of their four matches played but they did inflict a comprehensive 10-1 victory over Ecuador in the group stage in 2015.

Phillippines will know that they must keep things tight at the back for as long as possible to avoid becoming the ‘whipping boys' in Group A but this will be no easy task as Switzerland will have marked this opening fixture as a ‘must win' in order to get off to a solid start.
