Alaves vs Sevilla Preview

Alaves made a losing start upon their return to the Spanish top flight last weekend when they were dealt a 1-0 defeat away from home at Cadiz but the hosts now return to the more familiar surroundings of their Estadio de Mendizorroza for this upcoming clash with Sevilla on Monday night.

Alaves gained promotion via the play-offs at the end of last season's La Liga 2 campaign when they registered a narrow 1-0 victory on aggregate against Levante and the hosts will no doubt be hoping for a better showing in the domestic top flight this time around after suffering relegation back in May 2022.

Alaves finished the previous disastrous La Liga campaign having picked up just three wins from their final 14 matches overall, each of which were registered on home soil with victories against Rayo Vallecano, Villarreal and Espanyol while also being handed no fewer than nine defeats within this period as well.

Monday night's hosts will therefore be desperate to keep things tight for as long as they can in this opening home game of the season and this could contribute to a low-scoring encounter at the Estadio de Mendizorroza as seven of Alaves' last 10 home games have resulted in Under 2.5 goals.

Sevilla were also handed a defeat on the opening day of this new La Liga season when they were dealt a 2-1 loss at home to Valencia, so they too will be keen to produce a better response on Monday night when they make their way to the Estadio de Mendizorroza.

After putting together a promising run of results in the Spanish top flight which saw Sevilla handed just one defeat over a period of eight games from early April though to mid-May, which also included picking up six wins in the process, Sevilla then suffered a disappointing slump in results.

The visitors finished the season without a win in their final four games of last term which consisted of two draws, 0-0 with Real Betis and 1-1 with Elche, along with back-to-back defeats to Real Madrid and Real Sociedad.

Goals may be in short supply though for Monday night's encounter as six of Sevilla's last 10 outings on the road have also resulted in Under 2.5 goals being scored while historically, this fixture has also produced low-scoring encounters.

10 of the previous 12 meetings between Alaves and Sevilla have produced two goals or less and as both teams will head into this forthcoming fixture on the back of defeats, both sides will be keen to grab at least a point in this clash in order to get themselves off the mark in this new La Liga campaign.
