Monaco vs Toulouse Preview

This weekend marks the final round of fixtures in the French top flight and features this upcoming clash between sixth-placed Monaco and 13th placed Toulouse, in this final game of the season that Monaco must win if they're to achieve a place in Europe for next season.

Monaco are level on points with fifth-placed Rennes but their goal difference is 16 goals inferior to their European rivals heading into this final fixture, so the hosts must take all three points here against a lowly Toulouse outfit with apparently little to play for.

This may be easier said than done though where Monaco are concerned as the home side have managed to muster just a single win from their last six league matches overall in Ligue 1 which came in the form of a 2-1 win away from home at Angers but having also slipped to four defeats within this period as well, the goals market may be the better and safer option for this fixture.

Losses to Lens, Montpellier, Lyon and Rennes have held Monaco back from already breaking into the top five, while results at home have also produced an indifferent return, winning just two of their last six games at their Stade Louis II.

Toulouse occupy 13th place in the Ligue 1 table which is probably a fair reflection of how the second half of their season has gone upon their return to the French top flight as the visitors have found league wins hard to come by since early February.

The visitors have managed to capture just four wins out of their last 16 matches overall which admittedly isn't a great return but the one thing in the visitors' favour is that three of these four wins were recorded on their travels with victories collected at Angers, Montpellier and Lorient.

After a slow and disappointing start to life back in Ligue 1, Toulouse had registered just one away win in their opening eight games on the road, losing six of these matches, but recent weeks have seen the visitors turn things around as they've won twice and drawn twice of their last four away games which should give them a boost ahead of this trip to Monaco on Saturday night.

Both Monaco and Toulouse head into this final fixture of the Ligue 1 season in fairly indifferent form and although Monaco's need is obviously greater than Toulouse's, the hosts have produced inconsistent results of late, and therefore a top five finish hangs in the balance.

However, goals for both teams look promising here as seven of the previous eight meetings between Monaco and Toulouse have seen both teams score.
