Manchester United vs Real Sociedad Preview

Manchester United were involved in a second 1-1 draw on the trot over the weekend in the Premier League when the Red Devils gained a valuable point by way of a 1-1 draw at home against second placed Arsenal which followed a 1-1 draw in Spain at Real Sociedad in last week's 1st leg of this round of last 16 Champions League tie at the Reale Arena.

Real Sociedad slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Sevilla in the Spanish top flight last weekend though which also extended the Spanish visitors' winless run in all competitions to four games overall which consists of three defeats and just one draw.

Following a promising but very brief three-match winning streak in all competitions towards the latter half of January which consisted of victories against Rangers, Fulham and Steaua Bucharest respectively, the mixed bag of results for Manchester United have continued in their subsequent eight games overall.

United have registered just two wins within this subsequent eight-game period, both of which were at home against the likes of Leicester City (FA Cup) and Ipswich Town (Premier League), while also being involved in three draws along with three defeats as well.

Manchester United's saving grace though in this season's Europa League is the fact that Ruben Amorim's side still remain unbeaten at Old Trafford and indeed they are the only side yet to taste defeat across all three European competitions.

Real Sociedad slumped to a third defeat in four games over the weekend in La Liga when Sevilla inflicted a 1-0 defeat upon Imanol Alguacil's side at their Reale Arena and having failed to fully exploit home advantage in last week's 1-1 draw in the 1st leg of this Europa League tie, the Spaniards face a tough trip to Manchester on Thursday night.

Recent defeats to Real Madrid and Barcelona, whilst understandable, have still contributed to a four-game winless run overall along with contributing to five defeats within Real Sociedad's last six outings on the road in all competitions.

Losses on their travels at Valencia, Lazio, Osasuna, Real Betis and Barcelona, the latter being a comprehensive 4-0 hiding at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, suggest this upcoming trip to Old Trafford could well prove to be their last involvement in this season's Europa League competition.

In addition, Real Sociedad have managed to capture just two wins from their last six away ties in the Europa League whilst also being handed defeats on the road at Roma, Viktoria Plzen and Lazio respectively.
