Championship, played Saturday, August 10th, 2024
Here is our Stoke v Coventry tip and game preview. Based on our detailed analysis of statistics listed below and other factors, we predicted both teams to not score in this game, under 2.5 goals, and a Stoke home win. Our confidence in this tip was moderate relative to other tips.
Stoke City also alleviated any last minute relegation fears towards the end of last season's campaign in the Championship as The Potters won their last three league games on the trot thus helping them to safety, while Coventry City well and truly blew their chances of claiming a play-off spot as the Sky Blues failed to win any of their final six league matches of last term.
Despite losing eight of their preceding 11 games in the Championship which had seemingly landed Stoke City in hot water and well and truly in the relegation dogfight towards the bottom of the English second tier table, Stoke City managed to respond in solid and resilient fashion as they bounced back to safety.
Just one defeat in their subsequent eight league matches along with picking up four wins and points gained by way of three stalemates saw Steven Schumacher's side clamber away from the relegation zone and up into their final position of 17th place in the Championship standings.
The loss came in the form of a heavy 3-0 defeat away from home at Swansea City but vital wins against Hull City, Plymouth Argyle, Southampton and Bristol City ensured Championship status for another season for The Potters.
With six games left remaining of last season's campaign in the Championship, Coventry City were perched in seventh place and just four points adrift of sixth placed Norwich City and the play-off pack, and with three of their last four games of last term due to be played on home soil at their Coventry Building Society Arena, it looked like Coventry City were on track to claim a play-off spot.
The Sky Blues had also picked up four wins within their preceding five games which came in the form of victories gained over Rotherham United, Watford, Huddersfield Town and most impressive of all, a 2-1 home win against high-flying Leeds United.
However, Mark Robins's side imploded in emphatic fashion as the west midlands club suffered five defeats in their final six games of last season's campaign and in turn put paid to any play-off ambitions they might have had in dramatic fashion.
Defeats at the hands of Southampton, Birmingham City, Hull City, Ipswich Town and QPR rounded off a miserable finish to what had seemed like being a triumphant season run-in for Robins's side.
Results away from home have also been a mixed bag for the visitors as they have collected just three wins in their last nine outings on the road, along with four defeats and two draws.
Stoke City v Coventry City Verdict
