Championship, played Friday, January 17th, 2025
Here is our Burnley v Sunderland tip and game preview. Based on our detailed analysis of statistics listed below and other factors, we predicted both teams to not score in this game, under 2.5 goals, and a Burnley home win. Our confidence in this tip was low relative to other tips.
Burnley took the honours and the spoils of victory in their recent Lancashire derby against fierce rivals Blackburn Rovers after securing a 1-0 win away from home at Ewood Park which in turn extended Burnley's unbeaten run in the Championship to a solid and impressive looking 13 games overall.
Sunderland also won a low-scoring affair last time out in the Championship when the Black Cats registered a 1-0 home win against Portsmouth to make it back-to-back wins for the north-east club, having previously collected all three points by way of an impressive 2-1 home win against Sheffield United.
Burnley currently occupy second place in the Championship table and just a single point separates them from the league leaders, Leeds United, ahead of this weekend's action in the English second tier.
The hosts therefore know all three points here on Friday night at Turf Moor would send The Clarets to the top of the table and see Scott Parker's side steal a march on their promotion rivals, and having picked up eight wins within these last 13 games, the hosts look in good shape to do just that.
In addition, Burnley still remain unbeaten at home so far in this season's Championship campaign along with their upcoming opponents, Sunderland.
Onto Sunderland then, and the north-east visitors will be eager to make it three league wins on the trot when they make their way to Turf Moor for Friday night's top four showdown in the Championship with a precious three points at stake for both teams.
Recent wins against Sheffield United and Portsmouth respectively have helped maintain Sunderland's ambitions of achieving at least a play-off spot this season but an even bigger prize may be awaiting the Black Cats as they trail their second placed hosts by just a two-point margin.
The wider picture shows Sunderland have been handed just two defeats within their previous 19 matches overall in the English second tier which includes picking up nine wins in the process as well, but the two defeats were inflicted upon Regis Le Bris's side on their travels, losing at Sheffield United and Stoke City.
However, although Sunderland have produced a solid and steady flow of results overall in the Championship this season, the Black Cats have found wins on the road hard to come by in recent times as the north-east visitors have managed to capture just one win in their last seven outings on the road.
Within these last seven away games, Sunderland have also failed to score on four occasions as well.
Burnley v Sunderland Verdict
Burnley have lost just once in their last eight meetings at home against Sunderland and the hosts look to hold the edge here as well.
Therefore, our main bet will be Burnley win @ 2.15
Other side bets worth considering:
Burnley win & Under 2.5 goals @ 4.00
Correct Score: Burnley 1-0 @ 6.00
