CONCACAF Gold Cup, played Monday, July 10th, 2023
Here is our USA v Canada tip and game preview. Based on our detailed analysis of statistics listed below and other factors, we predicted both teams to not score in this game, under 2.5 goals, and a USA home win. Our confidence in this tip was low relative to other tips.
Sunday evening brings us the last of the quarter-final ties in the Gold Cup but by means the least as it features this blockbuster tie between USA and Canada as two old foes go toe-to-toe at the TQL Stadium in what promises to be an interesting clash to say the least!
Group A favourites, USA, duly finished top of the group but by a smaller margin than many anticipated before this tournament began as they ousted Jamaica into top spot only by goal difference but nevertheless, Brian Callaghan's side did enough during the group stage to deserve progression through to the quarter-finals of the competition.
The States remained unbeaten throughout the group campaign as they started in modest fashion by drawing 1-1 with Jamaica in their opening match but USA really got going after that, recording 6-0 victories over both St Kitts & Nevis and then Trinidad & Tobago to sail through to the last eight of the competition.
USA are now unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions, picking up six wins in the process and they also possess an impressive record in the Gold Cup too; the States have lost just once in their last 21 matches overall whilst also collecting no fewer than 18 wins along the way.
Canada's progression through to the last eight of this year's Gold Cup was a little less convincing than that of USA as they finished runners-up in Group D behind surprise package Guatemala who topped the group by a two-point margin over Canada.
Canada started in slow and sluggish fashion in the group stage as they were held to draws by both Guadeloupe and Guatemala in 2-2 and 0-0 stalemates but they ensured their passage through to this quarter-final stage by recording a resounding 4-2 victory over bottom of the group, Cuba, in their final match in the group.
However, recent results have produced inconsistent performances from Canada who have managed just four wins from their last 10 matches overall along with two draws and four defeats, so do they have what it takes to match USA's goalscoring prowess in recent games?
USA v Canada Verdict
The bi-annual Gold Cup has been dominated by USA and Mexico since 2002 as USA have romped to six titles while Mexico are close runners-up with five titles to their name but the hosts, USA, will fancy their chances against a Canadian outfit who have yet to really convince in this year's competition.
Canada have won the Gold Cup just once which was back in 2000 but their recent unconvincing displays on the international stage in general suggest this could be a bridge too far for John Herdman's side.
Therefore, our main bet will be USA win @ 1.65
Other side bets worth considering:
Under 2.5 goals @ 1.85
Correct score: USA 1-0 @ 6.50
