World Cup semi-finalists in 2011, France, will take on Jamaica at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday night with the French no doubt looking to chalk up an early three points in this Group E opener to set them on their way of claiming one of the top two spots in the group.

A 1-0 defeat to Australia ended a previously impressive seven-match unbeaten run in all internationals for France which consisted of no fewer than six wins and a draw, but France will be confident that they can set the record straight against the second-lowest ranked nation in Group E, 43rd placed Jamaica, when these two teams come fact to face on Sunday.

New national coach, Herve Renard, has taken over the reigns and he'll be keen to transfer his considerable knowledge and success on the international stage over to the women's game, starting with this World Cup campaign.

Renard had previously overseen Saudia Arabia's shock victory over Argentina in the recent men's World Cup and his pedigree as a national coach is a solid one.

Jamaica qualified for this World Cup in Australia and New Zealand by virtue of making it through to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF W Championship in 2022 and they will head into this opening game against France in Group E in improved spirits after recording a much-needed 1-0 win against Morocco just prior to the start of this tournament.

However, although Jamaica tasted success last time out, this victory has failed to paper over the previous cracks that appeared due to a seven-match winless run in all internationals which included no fewer than six losses within this woeful period of results for the Caribbean outfit.

Interestingly, six of these seven matches also resulted in Over 2.5 goals and included heavy defeats to the likes of Spain 3-0, Australia 3-0, El Salvador 5-2 and a 7-3 thrashing handed down by Mexico, so any confidence ahead of this tournament is likely to be fragile at best.

Jamaica's previous best showing in a World Cup was reaching the group stage back in 2019 but they won't have too many happy memories of this campaign as they lost each of their three group games, conceding a total of 12 goals and scoring just one in reply and they were duly eliminated from the tournament.

France are expected to dominate proceedings here this Sunday against Jamaica and the quality and depth of the French side should be too much for a Jamaica outfit who have shipped a number of goals in recent times on the international stage.
