Bayer Leverkusen were just 90 minutes away from securing a memorable double as Xabi Alonso's side had already claimed the German Bundesliga league title prior to meeting Atalanta in the Europa League final, but the Italians ran out comfortable 3-0 winners thanks to a hat-trick by Andre Lookman.

On the domestic front, Bayer Leverkusen were head and shoulders above the rest of the competition as Alonso's side finished a significant 17 points ahead of their closest rivals, Stuttgart, who were another of last season's surprise package.

Leverkusen will therefore be keen to continue their stranglehold on the Bundesliga this time around as well, and having lost just once in pre-season and the start of this new season, the visitors will fancy their chances of producing a winning start to this new campaign.
