Southampton's disastrous return to the Premier League continued last weekend when the south coast club were dealt a 1-0 defeat in the west midlands away at Aston Villa, making it four defeats out of their last five matches in the English top flight which has resulted in Saints remaining firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.

Tottenham slipped to a second defeat on the trot last Sunday afternoon in a 4-3 loss at home to Chelsea despite holding what seemed like a match-winning 2-0 lead, but having previously lost 1-0 away from home at Bournemouth, Spurs will now be looking to avoid a third loss on the trot.

Recent defeats at the hands of Wolves, Liverpool, Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively have rubbed further salt into what are already gaping wounds for Russell Martin's side as Southampton sit rock-bottom of the Premier League table where they find themselves eight points adrift of safety.

Upon their return back to the English top flight, Southampton have managed to collect just one win throughout this season to date which came in the shape of a narrow 1-0 home win against Everton but this has been Saints' only highlight in an otherwise downright miserable campaign.

Having slipped to 12 defeats within their 15 matches played in total, Southampton will do well to gain even a point here against Tottenham despite holding home advantage at their St Marys Stadium.

Tottenham's inconsistent and untrustworthy streak came to the fore once again last Sunday when the north London side somehow contrived to throw away a seemingly commanding 2-0 lead against Chelsea and end up losing 4-3 at their Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It was certainly a blow to Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou as he saw his side completely lose the plot from a seemingly match-winning position but that performance was just a typical snapshot of how Tottenham's Premier League campaign has unfolded up until now.

Spurs have now dropped down to 11th place in the Premier League table following these recent back-to-back defeats and their overall season has consisted of picking up six wins, two draws but also slipping to seven defeats, so a mid-table position is about right for the north London club.

Nevertheless, 3-0 and 4-0 wins away from home at Manchester United and Manchester City respectively suggest Tottenham are more than capable of ‘switching on' down on the south coast especially against a Southampton side whose morale must be at rock-bottom.
