There's just the one fixture being played in the Championship on Tuesday night but nevertheless a pretty important one as fourth placed Southampton take on 10th placed Preston NE at the St Mary's Stadium with the hosts seeking a third home win on the trot while Preston NE will be eager to return to winning ways following Saturday's disappointing 1-0 defeat home to Norwich City.

Having had to endure a sticky patch of results in the English second tier which yielded just three wins in nine games for Southampton from mid-February through to the early part of this month, Southampton have since produced a positive response by recording back-to-back home wins against Coventry City and Watford at their St Mary's Stadium.

Results on home soil this season though have been pretty steady as Saints have lost just twice in their last 17 home games along with picking up 13 wins in the process.

Preston NE slipped to what could prove to be a pivotal 1-0 defeat at home to Norwich City on Saturday afternoon which has made a dent in Preston's ambitions of achieving a possible top six finish and a place in the play-offs.

After putting together a three-match winning streak earlier in the season during the early part of February which culminated in wins against Ipswich Town, Cardiff city and Middlesbrough respectively, Ryan Lowe's side have managed to collect just a further four league wins in their subsequent 10 matches in the Championship which has left the visitors sitting in 10th place and eight points behind sixth placed Norwich City.

Victories against Coventry City, Plymouth Argyle, Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town have been offset by losses incurred against Stoke City, Birmingham City and Norwich City, so the visitors really need all three points at St Mary's Stadium on Tuesday night if they are to start making in-roads into the play-off pack.

However, having managed to collect just three wins from their last nine outings on the road, Preston NE look to have their work cut out against a solid Southampton side in their own backyard.
