Next, we turn our attention to South America and the Copa Libertadores which has just got underway, with Uruguayan outfit, Liverpool Montevideo, and Brazilian Serie A side, Corinthians, starting their campaign in Group E on Thursday night at the Estadio Belvedere.

In a group that also includes Argentinian side, Argentinos Jrs and Ecuador club, Independiente, both Liverpool and Corinthians look set to be fighting it out for one of the other top two spots and Copa Sudamericana places respectively so both teams will be keen to make a good start here.

Liverpool Montevideo finished top of the 2022 Uruguayan Primera Division standings but the hosts have made an indifferent start to this season's campaign as they sit mid-table having won three, drawn three and lost three to date, and they will be heading into this Copa Libertadores opening group game on the back of a 1-0 defeat away at Cerro Largo.

However, Liverpool can draw some consolation from the fact that each of their wins in the league have been achieved on home soil with victories over Fenix, City Torque and the current league leaders, Penarol, the latter two wins both being under 2.5 goals.

Corinthians have yet to start their Brazilian Serie A season but the visitors did finish top of their group in the interim Paulista A1 format, finishing top of Group C by a healthy 10-point margin over runners-up, Ituano, who then went onto dump Corinthians out of the knockout stage on penalties after the scores finished 1-1 at the end of regular time.

Last season, Corinthians finished in fourth place in Serie A though, which earned them a place in this season's Copa Libertadores and after a promising showing in last season's competition which saw Corinthians finish runners-up behind Group E winners, Boca Juniors, the visitors will be aiming to finish in the top two of this season's group stage.

Interestingly, Corinthians drew three of their six group games in last season's Copa Libertadores, two of which were away from home at Deportivo Cali and Boca Juniors in 0-0 and 1-1 stalemates, while losing 2-0 at the bottom side, Always Ready, so there are no guarantees of a win for Corinthians in this group opener on Thursday.

These two sides have never met before in any competitive match or otherwise but neither club will want to start their Copa Libertadores campaign with a loss so we could be in for a cagey and low-scoring affair here at the Estadio Belvedere, while taking their chances against Independiente who suffered a heavy 3-0 opening loss to Argentinos Jrs.
