The finale of this season's elite European club competition, the Champions League, will be played out at Wembley Stadium between German club, Borussia Dortmund, and Spanish side, Real Madrid, as the two teams battle it out to decide who will be crowned European champions on Saturday night in London.

On the German domestic front, Borussia Dortmund experienced a somewhat frustrating season in the Bundesliga as they had to make do with a fifth placed finish and a massive 27 points behind the title winners, Bayer Leverkusen, but nevertheless, Edin Terzic's side still achieved Champions League qualification for next season thanks to Germany being awarded five qualifying places this season.

Following a purple patch in form from early March through to the end of that month which produced five wins on the trot in the shape of victories over Union Berlin, Werder Bremen, PSV, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund's subsequent results have been a little inconsistent.

It's true that Dortmund have captured six wins within their subsequent 11 games in all competitions but Terzic's side have also slipped to four defeats as well, one of these losses being against Spanish opposition when they lost 2-1 away from home at Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Borussia Dortmund had earlier finished top of Group F by a three-point margin over PSG, and then knocked out PSV, Atletico Madrid and PSG in the knockout rounds to reach the final.

Real Madrid captured the La Liga title this season by a significant 10-point margin over runners-up and old foes, Barcelona, as Carlo Ancelotti's side fairly romped to a thoroughly well deserved domestic title and the Spanish outfit will now be looking to achieve ‘the double' on Saturday night by winning the highly coveted Champions League trophy at Wembley Stadium.

To be handed just two defeats throughout the whole season in all competitions is an extraordinary statistic but one that manager Carlo Ancelotti and Real Madrid have achieved with these rare losses both being dealt out to them by Atletico Madrid in La Liga and then later on in the Copa del Rey.

Since the latter cup defeat back in mid-January, Real Madrid have embarked upon an excellent 25-match unbeaten sequence in all competitions which includes collecting no fewer than 17 wins in the process although one of these wins came in the form of a penalty shoot-out win against Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid fairly breezed through the group stage earlier in this competition as they recorded a 100% winning record on their way to winning Group C by an eight-point margin over runners-up, Napoli.

Ancelotti's side then disposed of the likes of RB Leipzig, Manchester City (on penalties) and Bayern Munich on their way to this season's final.
