Brazil vs Argentina Preview

Brazil will no doubt be looking forward to returning to their home surroundings for Tuesday night's clash with Argentina after being handed two defeats on the trot on their travels while Argentina slipped to their first defeat since the end of November last year last time out against Uruguay, so both sides will be desperate to return to winning ways here on Tuesday night.

Despite picking up wins in the first two games of this World Cup qualifying campaign with victories against Bolivia and Peru, Brazil have since slumped to three games without a win which has seen Fernando Diniz's pick up just one point from the last possible 15 on offer following a disappointing 1-1 draw at home with Venezuela and then lost back-to-back away games at Uruguay and Colombia respectively.

A disappointing showing in the Qatar World Cup resulted in an early exit in the knockout rounds to Croatia on penalties and results overall in recent times have mirrored their inconsistent ways as Brazil have managed to pick up just four wins in their last 11 matches overall.

However, six defeats within these 11 games suggests Brazil may find it tough to record a victory over their old foes Argentina on Tuesday night but goals for both sides look appealing as eight of Brazil's last 11 matches have resulted in goals for both teams.

World Cup title holders, Argentina, sit two points clear at the top of the South American World Cup qualifying table although they also head into this Tuesday night's clash at the Maracana on the back of a disappointing and unexpected 2-0 defeat at home to Uruguay, so Lionel Scaloni's side will be eager to bounce back with a win here.

Argentina had started their World Cup qualifying campaign in devastating fashion as La Albiceleste recorded four wins on the trot with victories collected against Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru which placed them as runaway leaders of the CONMEBOL table but the Argentinians have since been pegged back after their loss to Uruguay.

That defeat to Uruguay ended a previously impressive 25-match unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers but the visitors face a tough challenge in the shape of their old rivals, Brazil, as the two heavyweights of the South American stage go head-to-head at the Maracana on Tuesday night.

Incidentally, five of Argentina's last 10 away games in World Cup qualifiers have also resulted with both teams scoring, so the goals market looks the most promising option for this clash.

Brazil v Argentina Verdict

National pride will almost certainly play a part here as these two South American heavyweights face off at the Maracana but both teams do look capable of at least hitting the back of the net in a game which could end all square.
