Lyon vs Nice Preview

Lyon picked up a second win on the trot in the French top flight last weekend with a 2-1 win gained on the road at Montpellier which has helped lift Pierre Sage's side up into 13th place in the Ligue 1 table and three points above third from bottom club orient, while Nice slipped to a 3-2 defeat at home to Monaco, leaving the second placed visitors some 11 points adrift of the league leaders, PSG.

Although Lyon still occupy a disappointing lower half position in the domestic top flight table, things could have been a lot worse as the hosts had previously produced a nightmare start to this Ligue 1 campaign having failed to win any of their opening 10 matches and indeed, winning just once in their first 14 matches of the new term.

Within this wretched 14-game start to the season, Lyon had slumped to nine defeats which had placed the hosts in a precarious position at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table but the hosts have since managed to turn their fortunes around by winning five of their subsequent seven matches overall.

Despite further losses to Le Havre and Rennes, important victories against Toulouse, Monaco, Nantes, Marseille and Montpellier have helped lift Lyon away from immediate danger, while five of Lyon's last 10 home games have also seen both teams score.

Nice were handed a disappointing 3-2 loss at home by Monaco in last weekend's action in Ligue 1 which continued the visitors' inconsistent sequence of results of late in the domestic top flight where Francesco Farioli's side have managed to collect just three wins out of their last eight matches overall.

Wins against Reims, Lens and Metz have been offset by suffering four defeats within this period as Nice have ben dealt defeats by the likes of Nantes, Le Havre, Rennes and Monaco, the former three losses all being away from home as well.

Following an excellent start to the season which saw Nice chalk up four wins on the trot away from home which included wins at PSG, Monaco, Metz and Clermont, the visitors have since failed to maintain their early momentum as they have now failed to win any of their last five outings on the road.

Therefore, the prospects of an away win here on Friday night look distinctly remote but having scored in seven of their last 11 away games in Ligue 1, Nice should at least hit the back of the net in this upcoming tussle at the Groupama Stadium.

Goals for both teams looks fairly likely here on Friday night as both Lyon and Nice have produced inconsistent results overall in Ligue 1 but both are very capable of creating chances in front of goal as well, and four of the last seven meetings have resulted in both teams scoring.
