Following a three-game winless run on the domestic stage in Italy, Lazio returned to winning ways in Serie A on the weekend when they recorded a welcome 3-1 win away from home at Cagliari which they will be hoping will set them up nicely for this upcoming 1st leg of their round of 16 Champions League tie against German champions, Bayern Munich, on Wednesday night.

A 3-0 loss away from home at Inter Milan in the Italian Super Cup along with a heavy 3-1 loss on the road at Atalanta in Serie A had outweighed the 0-0 draw at home with Napoli in between times, but Maurizio Sarri's side will now be in a much more positive frame of mind ahead of their European clash in midweek.

Lazio had previously chalked up five wins on the trot in all competitions with four of these victories being achieved in Serie A with wins gained over Empoli, Frosinone, Udinese and Lecce, while on the Champions League stage Lazio finished runners-up in Group E behind the winners, Atletico Madrid.

Three wins and a draw were enough for Lazio to book their place in the knockout stage of this season's competition but the Italians may still remember the heavy 4-1 thrashing they received by Bayern Munich back in February 2021.

Onto Bayern Munich and the German visitors were handed an uncharacteristic 3-0 defeat away from home at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on the weekend which ended a previous three-match winning streak in the domestic top flight which consisted of victories over Union Berlin, Augsburg and Borussia M'gladbach.

The bigger picture though does seem to place Bayern Munich in a more favourable position than that of their Italian counterparts ahead of this 1st leg tie in the Champions League as Thomas Tuchel's side have slipped to just three defeats out of their last 16 matches in all competitions while picking up 11 wins in the process.

On the Champions League front, Bayern Munich veritably sailed through the group stage as the Germans remained unbeaten throughout their six games and having won five of these six matches, the visitors will be confident that they can progress through to the next round at the expense of Lazio.

Four of these six group games also resulted in Over 2.5 goals so the goals market may be the best option for this upcoming tussle, especially as Bayern Munich were handed a heavy defeat on the weekend.
