Group stages in these big tournaments often do not go to plan! Take a look at the order of the games to be played and you might spot scenarios whereby certain teams may settle for draws, or other teams will have to go out and attack to win in order to qualify. Here are our tips for the group stages.
Group D looks close, but England are favourites to win it at 13/8, a poor bet in our opinion, albeit we still think England may scrape the group. England are always nervous at these big tournaments, and any one of the other 3 teams in this group could take points from England, especially with joint hosts Ukraine on home soil. England open the group against France, and a loss for England here could really put France in the driving seat.
Ukraine have a slight advantage in that they play 2 of their games before England and Sweden play their second game. Against France and Sweden, Ukraine could pick up enough points going into their final game against England to only need a draw to qualify.
Given England play France and Sweden in their first two games, we think that they will need to take points off these teams to qualify and not go into their final game with Ukraine needing a win. Therefore this may throw this group wide open and we are tipping Ukraine to get through here ahead of France and Sweden. England may just top the group on goal difference, and with that final game against Ukraine, both teams may settle for a draw to both go through.
WinDrawWin Tips: England to win the group, Ukraine second,
France third, and Sweden bottom.
