Group stages in these big tournaments often do not go to plan! Take a look at the order of the games to be played and you might spot scenarios whereby certain teams may settle for draws, or other teams will have to go out and attack to win in order to qualify. Here are our tips for the group stages.
Group A sees joint hosts Poland with a kinder draw than they could have faced. Poland are one of the rank outsiders to win the tournament at 50/1, but may have a chance of getting through this group. Poland open the tournament against Greece, and a win in the opening game may mean that all they would need to potentially scrape through in second place is a draw against Russia or Czech Republic. Russia face the Czechs in their opening game, and this may be a close encounter. If these sides draw then the winner of the opening Poland v Greece game will have a lot of momentum, and the Russians or Czechs may get nervous about their qualification.
The odds for Group A suggest this theory may have some weight. Russia are 13/10 favourites to win the group, Poland are second favourites at 3/1, with the Czechs and Greece 7/2 and 9/2 respectively.
Ultimately all of the games in this group are going to be tight, and with the joint hosts Poland having the home support, they could really upset this group and lead to a surprise.
WinDrawWin Tips: Russia to win the group, Poland second,
Czech Republic third, and Greece bottom.
