Long Run and Kauto Star head the field for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Long Run is slight favourite, however nearer the day Kauto Star will probably come in on the betting as many back him to win another title. Long Run has a great pedigree, and youth too, and has a 62% strike rate and the winner of the Gold Cup in 2011. Long Run is a solid performer and if stays out of trouble in the race is going to challenge for the win. Kauto Star is 12 years old now and it would be a fitting end to Cheltenham for Kauto Star to win another title. However, we can not see Kauto Star pulling off a win against an excellent Long Run. If Kauto could not do it last year then we do not think he can do it this year. Kauto Star has also had a bad fall in the run up to Cheltenham and could go into the event not at 100%. The sentimental bets may go on Kauto Star, but the sensible money in our opinion is on Long Run.
In our opinion this is a 2 horse race, but out of the rest of the field Burton Port may challenge for a place. Quel Esprit has stepped up to this distance well, and at 14/1 may be worth an each way shot.
Weird Al has the experience to possibly finish in the places, while Midnight Chase could also prove to be a good bet based on experience and a good track record at Cheltenham.
