Galileo's Choice and Steps to Freedom start joint favourites with most bookmakers for this first race of the Festival.
Galileo's Choice deservedly, winning 46% of its career races and a horse that likes this distance and a consistent runner who finishes in the places much of the time.
Steps to Freedom won at Cheltenham over the jumps in November 2011, and is also well fancied. Cinders and Ashes is again on great form, winning at Aintree and Haydock in December and Haydock again in January. On all occasions Cinders and Ashes won on heavy going, so would warrant a look at depending on the going on March 14th and may drift in the odds if the going is good. Cinders and Ashes is also lesser experienced that the two favourites.
Darlan, Midnight Game, Montbazon, and Simonsig all follow in the odds at around 10/1. Darlan has been impressive over the hurdles, but fell at Newbury in February. Midnight Game likes the soft ground, so would warrant waiting until the going is known. Montbazon has been consistent on both good and soft ground, and may warrant and each way bet. Simonsig is relatively inexperienced compare to the favourites, but has been impressive in its last 4 race with 3 wins and a 2nd place.
From the rest of the field, Tetlami looks like a good each way bet at 14/1 who is good on good and soft ground and has more wins than many of the lower priced horses. Balder Succes has also been impressive and at 16/1 looks good value for an each way bet.
