Types Of Bet Explained

There are so many types of bet with strange names such as 'patent', 'trixie' and 'heinz', that people get confused and don't tend to go for types of bet they don't understand. Some of these permutations can often be the better strategies to adopt than simply betting amounts on straight single outcomes, so they are worth knowing about and understanding.

There are many types of bet. Here are some of the most common types.

Terminology: when we describe betting on a number of 'outcomes', by this we mean betting on a number of selections, or bets. For example, an 'outcome' might include one team to beat another, a player to score a goal, or a match to end in a draw.

What Is A Single Bet?

A single bet is simply a bet placed on one outcome. For example, Man United to beat Chelsea.

Singles can also include bets such as a player to score first in a match, a team to beat another team by a certain score, or a team to be winning at half-time and also winning at full-time (half-time/full-time betting), among many others.

Single Bet Example

You place a $10 bet on Manchester United to beat Chelsea. Manchester United are priced at odds of 125 to win. Your returns will therefore be $10 x ((125/100)+1), or $22.50.

What Is A Double Bet?

A double bet contains two outcomes. Both outcomes must win for a double bet to win. A double bet has one stake, and this stake is multiplied by the first outcome odds, and the winnings from this are then multiplied by the second outcome odds. A double bet is effectively an accumulator for two selections.

Double Bet Example

You place a $10 bet on Manchester United to beat Chelsea and Arsenal to beat Leicester. Manchester United are priced at odds of 110 to win, and Arsenal are priced at odds of -125 to win.

The combined odds on both Manchester United and Arsenal to win will be ((110/100)+1) x ((100/125)+1) = 280. Your returns will therefore be at 280, or $10.

What Is A Treble, Accumulator, Multiple, or Acca Bet?

A bet with 3 or more selections is widely regarded as an accumulator (although technically you could argue that a double is an accumulator or multiple too). A bet with 3 selections is commonly referred to as a treble, and any bet with more than 3 selections is generally referred to as an accumulator. Some people also call this bet a multiple, or a bet bundle, or in the USA it is called a parlay.

A multiple bet requires all selections in the bet to win. If one selection loses, then the whole bet loses, since there are no returns for getting part of a straight multiple bet correct.

There are other types of bet that can be placed that will allow some selections to lose and part of the bet to still win, and some bookmakers offer promotions such as accumulator bet insurance or one leg lets you down and you receive a free bet in return.

The example below shows a treble bet, but the same logic can be applied to any number of selections in an accumulator bet.

Treble Bet Example

You place a $10 bet on Manchester United to beat Chelsea, Arsenal to beat Leicester and Liverpool to beat Everton. The odds on each selection are -

  1. Man Utd @ 130
  2. Arsenal @ 110
  3. Liverpool @ -125

The combined odds on both Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool to win will be 800. Your returns will therefore be $10 at 800, or $90.00.

What Is A Doubles And Singles Permutation?

Any permutation involves creating different combinations of bets from a specified number of selections. In a doubles and singles permutation you choose 4 or 5 outcomes and get bets on the singles and doubles combinations from the 4 or 5 games.

Doubles And Singles Example

You choose 4 selections - Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool to win. In your permutation you will get 4 single bets and 6 double bets, as follows.

  1. Man Utd to win
  2. Chelsea to win
  3. Arsenal to win
  4. Liverpool to win
  5. Man Utd & Chelsea to win double
  6. Man Utd & Arsenal to win double
  7. Man Utd & Liverpool to win double
  8. Chelsea & Arsenal to win double
  9. Chelsea & Liverpool to win double
  10. Arsenal & Liverpool to win double

So, 4 single bets and 6 double bets, making 10 bets in total.

What Is A Patent Bet?

A Patent is a permutation bet that contains 3 selections. From these 3 outcomes you'll get 7 bets - 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble.

Patent Bet Example

You choose 3 selections - Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal to win. In your Patent you will get 3 single bets, 3 double bets, and 1 treble bet as follows. Your unit stake will be multiplied by 7 to give your total stake, because there are 7 bets in a Patent.

  1. Man Utd to win
  2. Chelsea to win
  3. Arsenal to win
  4. Man Utd & Chelsea to win double
  5. Man Utd & Arsenal to win double
  6. Chelsea & Arsenal to win double
  7. Man Utd & Chelsea & Arsenal to win treble

Tip - given there are 7 bets in a Patent, you could select 3 outcomes in a market that provides greater odds than the match outcome market. For example, the half-time full-time market. This could mean that with just one selection winning in a patent that your total stake is covered with just 1 winner from 3.

What Is A Trixie Bet?

A Trixie is a permutation that contains 3 selections. It is similar to a Patent, except you don't get any singles. A Trixie is 4 bets from 3 outcomes - 3 doubles and 1 treble.

Trixie Bet Example

You choose 3 selections - Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal to win. In your Trixie you will get 3 double bets, and 1 treble bet as follows, but no single bets. Your unit stake will be multiplied by 4 to give your total stake, because there are 4 bets in a Trixie.

  1. Man Utd & Chelsea to win double
  2. Man Utd & Arsenal to win double
  3. Chelsea & Arsenal to win double
  4. Man Utd & Chelsea & Arsenal to win treble

Tip - when considering a Trixie bet it might be advisable to think about selections that are more likely to win, than in other bets like Patent bets. The reasoning for this is that you do not win anything in a Trixie if just 1 of your 3 selections wins, as there are no singles in a Trixie bet. You are relying on at least 2 outcomes to win in a Trixie bet to get a return.

What Is A Lucky 15 Bet?

A Lucky 15 bet contains 4 selections and includes 15 bets. Like a Patent (which contains 3 selections), you get all combinations of bets from your 4 selections - 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 quadruple, equalling 15 bets.

Lucky 15 Bet Example

You choose 4 selections - Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs to win. In your Lucky 15 you will get 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 four-fold bet. Your unit stake will be multiplied by 15 to give your total stake, because there are 15 bets in a Lucky 15.

  14. Chelsea & Arsenal & Spurs to win treble
  15. Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal & Spurs to win four-fold

What Is A Yankee Bet?

A Yankee Bet contains 4 selections and includes 11 bets. It is similar to a Lucky 15, except you don't get any singles. The 11 bets in a Yankee include 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 quadruple.

This type of bet is preferable in some ways than the Lucky 15 you might not want to place 15 bets, and instead just 11 bets to reduce your total stake. This means that your stake is lower, but remember you don't win anything for only one correct outcome in a Yankee bet because there are no singles in this permutation.

Yankee Bet Example

You choose 4 selections - Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs to win. In your Yankee you will get 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 four-fold bet. Your unit stake will be multiplied by 11 to give your total stake, because there are 11 bets in a Yankee.

  1. Man Utd & Chelsea to win double
  2. Man Utd & Arsenal to win double
  3. Man Utd & Spurs to win double
  4. Chelsea & Arsenal to win double
  5. Chelsea & Spurs to win double
  6. Arsenal & Spurs to win double
  7. Man Utd & Chelsea & Arsenal to win treble
  8. Man Utd & Chelsea & Spurs to win treble
  9. Man Utd & Arsenal & Spurs to win treble
  10. Chelsea & Arsenal & Spurs to win treble
  11. Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal & Spurs to win four-fold

What Is A Super Yankee Bet?

A Super Yankee Bet contains 5 selections and includes 26 bets. It is similar to the Yankee, except it covers 5 outcomes, not 4. This increases the amount of bets in the permutation.

You'll get 26 bets - 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 four-folds, and 1 five-fold. In general the more permutations you have the more your bet stake is diluted across your selections.

Super Yankee Bet Example

You choose 5 selections and get 10 doubles, 10 trebles, and 5 four-folds and 1 five-fold bet. Your unit stake will be multiplied by 26 to give your total stake, because there are 26 bets in a Super Yankee.

  • 10x Doubles
  • 10x Trebles
  • 5x Four-Folds
  • 1x Five-Fold

What Is A Heinz Bet?

A Heinz Bet contains 6 selections and 57 bets. It is like a Super Yankee, but across 6 outcomes, not 5. This gives you 57 bets - 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds, 6 five-folds and 1 six-fold.

Heinz Bet Example

You choose 6 selections and get 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 four-folds, 6 five-folds and 1 six-fold bet. Your unit stake will be multiplied by 57 to give your total stake, because there are 57 bets in a Heinz.

  • 15x Doubles
  • 20x Trebles
  • 15x Four-Folds
  • 6x Five-Folds
  • 1x Six-Fold

What Is A Goliath Bet?

A Goliath Bet involves betting on 8 selections, giving you 247 bets - 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 four-folds, 56 five-folds, 28 six-folds, 8 seven-folds and 1 eight-fold.

Depending on the selections and odds you choose you'll probably need at least 3 winners out of 8 in order to make any profit. With this type of bet you're only going to be betting pennies per unit stake because you have 247 bets.

Goliath Bet Example

You choose 8 selections and get 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 four-folds, 56 five-folds, 28 six-folds, 8 seven-folds and 1 eight-fold bet. Your unit stake will be multiplied by 247 to give your total stake, because there are 247 bets in a Goliath.
