In the big event of the Grand National meet, many punters often say that picking a winner is pot luck in this race. However, with many runners coming off great performances at Cheltenham it is easy to see why runners like Synchronised lead the betting field.
Synchronised is joint favourite at 8/1 with Prince De Beauchene. Synchronised should certainly have a great chance of featuring if lasting the distance. It is difficult to not remember that this is a horse that won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March ahead of Long Run and Kauto Star.
Prince De Beauchene loves the soft to heavy going, and if the weather suits, Prince De Beauchene will be well backed. Prince De Beauchene won the Handicap Chase at the Grand National meet last year. Given Prince De Beauchene is a runner that prefers the heavy going, it is probably worth waiting until nearer the race to determine the conditions. Odds could certainly drift if the weather is good.
Junior is next in the betting at 9/1. Junior is a horse that is run on the flat and hurdle courses, and is a great all rounder. Although Junior only has a 24% career win rate, Junior is consistent, and could place here. Junior is possibly worth a place bet if the odds drift a little.
Burton Port is 12/1. Burton Port showed well at Cheltenham, finishing 4th in the Gold Cup to the surprise of many. However, that performance showed that Burton Port is a stayer and could pose a challenge in the Grand National. Burton Port likes the good going.
Ballabriggs and Sunnyhillboy are both 14/1. Ballabriggs is an 11 year old that is very consistent, and if you are looking for experience over youth then Ballabriggs may stay the distance and could pull off a place position.
Sunnyhillboy is well priced due to a win at the Cheltenham Festival. However Sunnyhillboy's previous record is not great, and 16/1 may be a little generous and largely based on one good race at Cheltenham.
Of the rest of the field, West End Rocker likes heavy going and may be worth an each way bet if the going suits. Cappa Bleu also likes the soft ground, but is untested over this distance.
Becauseicouldntsee at 20/1 looks like good value out of the leaders in the betting field. Becauseicouldntsee came 2nd at Cheltenham in March and although does not have a great win rate is consistent at placing. Becauseicouldntsee fell in the Grand National last year, but given good form at Cheltenham we are going for this outside bet to take a win given good value odds.
WinDrawWin Tips: Becauseicouldntsee to win. Synchronised and Ballabriggs to place.
